About Zer0

Post by storageeer » Sun Oct 07, 2012 10:16 am

I have been using Zer0 for a time now, so I decided to write down my thought on this. If anything seems unreasonable, or hard to implement, please tell me.

Feature requests:
├── default folder blacklist, to avoid the delete of system files and such (I am not certain if there is something like this is implemented or not)
├── user-created folder blacklist (message: "Zer0 cannot delete files from that folder" or such)
└── the possibility of destroying all recoverable data from a selected folder (user-case: user deleted a file the normal way, but later he/she wants to make sure the file is unrecoverable)

Enhancement requests:
├── "Clear list" button, what removes all elements of the list (but not deleting them from the system)
│ └── when pressing the Delete button, Zer0 should delete the selected file(s) from the list ("Are you sure you want to remove the selected files?")
├── the "Delete" button should change to "Retry Delete" if the removal of one or more files were unsuccessful (e.g.: because the file was being used or it was missing), and the list hasn't been cleared yet
├── When the list of files is longer than what can be shown of the screen, the screen should follow the Message cells, similar to how SUMo acts when it checks for updates
└── when adding another file to an existing list, where a/the freshly deleted file is still shown, upon pressing the "Delete" button, the message for the deleted file should say "File already removed"

Experienced bug:
└── Zer0 was unable to remove a file with special characters (Chinese) in it's name [Win7, hun]

First, to request a "read-only" check, and do not proceed with such files.
Currently, ZerO renames, but does not actually delete, and reports "Failed", but by now that files are all renamed without extension (which may actually reveal some of the secure deletion logic?).

Second, I'd be curious to know whether this one request is feasible:

"the possibility of destroying all recoverable data from a selected folder"

I often find I've done just that -- deleted files the normal way, but then realize I should have used Zer0.
Would be nice to even script this.

As a detailed use case, after completing online banking and financial sessions, I'd like to know that all sensitive materials are unrecoverable from my temp internet folder, even after I've shut down my browser, which clears its own cache on exit, but not in a secure manner.

From the downloads page, it seems that only the full version and not the "lite" version is updated for release 0.11.0.12. The lite version today is still 0.10.1.11.
