DUMo - First impressions

Post by TheAncient » Wed Jan 07, 2015 11:25 pm

After using SUMo for a couple of months and finding it quite useful, I thought I'd give DUMo a try.

Unfortunately, once DUMo finds a driver it believes is outdated, the hunt begins: Among the drivers DUMo considers outdated on my machine, I have not been able to find a single one. Most of the links offered lead to downloads of driver updater software, hardware reviews, places to buy hardware, or equally irrelevant sites. In some cases, DUMo suggests updates are available but the officially sanctioned AMD driver update utility says everything is up to date. So far I am not impressed as trying to track down those drivers is taking far too much time. My old stand-by, SlimDrivers, is likely not as accurate as DUMo but at least when SlimDrivers finds an outdated driver, it can be downloaded right from the program. (This post is not intended as an endorsement for SlimDrivers: On the rare occasion when I use it, I ALWAYS have a full backup of my system as a fall-back. Slimdrivers can - and occasionally will - crash your system.)
(I would have attached a screen shot of the DUMo vs AMD AutoDetect here but I can't figure out how to do that)

I'm quite surprised because DUMo only links to "DUMo pages" like this one, where you'll find link to manufacturer's site for official driver downloads

On the page you linked in your post, we have the following links:

Left-hand side: Driver Manager download page
Top right: Donate to DUMo and ConvertXtoDVD download
Bottom right: Network Performance & DPI (SolarWinds Trial Download) and
USB - Drivers Downloads (Download slimwares software)
All of the above are needed to pay the bills and are easily identified as Ads rather than the download for the driver.

Next, in the middle of the page comes a link to “APC by Schneider Electric” which leads to – nowhere (“The requested URL /dumo/company.php was not found on this server.”) Then we have the “Propose Link” link which opens your email client and is obviously not intended to download a driver.
Finally we come to the blue “Download APC UPS” button which just leads to the “Download Updates” section further down the page.

Finally, in the “Download Updates” section we get to something that looks promising: a link to a customized Google search for “APC by Schneider Electric APC UPS”. The result for this search shows more than half a page of ads – mostly places where you can buy replacement batteries for APC UPS but also such gems a link to a package tracker for the shipping company UPS. In the actual search results we get stuff like links to the Wikipedia entry for APC, APC corporate information, specific APC products and at least 10 more pages of equally unintuitive and largely irrelevant links.
One of the links (“Company Information”) is supposed to lead to apc.com/company and one would expect to be able to start hunting from there but the link produces an error message: “Internal Server Error – Read -The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. - Reference #3.c456434d.1420904588.986b63e

Not one of the various links presented anywhere is an obvious, intuitive link to a download of a driver.
I am sure that one of the links within that stack of 10 pages of search results will lead to such a download link – but which one? Rather than hunting through all those results, I might as well go to apc.com and start my own search there.

I have just registered the product and well the first impressions that I am getting is that DUMo is finding the drivers alright. But that nothing else is going on in the screen.
I can click on download or System upgrade but nothing is happening. I have been looking at the same screen for a while, I could almost start googling the version numbers and I will get at least a few out of my list.
I can't seem to find any description of how DUMo works. The idea is good and you guys are finding drivers that almost nobody finds, even manufacturers aren't showing those drivers on their website.

Can you please put something like a "how to use DUMo", that might help out and get people to use it.

Thanks though for creating it.

Hi Kyle,

I am using the latest version 2.0.2.15.
I have tried it a few times now and I am really not seeing what DUMo is doing besides looking up the latest driver version. (which is still good because than I can search myself with a much better result).

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Greets,

DUMo does not download nor install by itself. It just "monitors" availability of updates and leads you to the manufacturer's page or google.

Thank you for your feedback.
