Checking for SUMO update first?

I've always wondered: Why does SUMO bother checking all of your software, then check for a new version of itself?

When there's a new SUMO, we're going to close the SUMO we have, get the new one, and start over... So why make everyone sit there for a needless software check each time there's an update? Why not check for a new SUMO first?
